The Important Role of NGA in the Independent Grocery Industry

When considering the grocery industry, there are many supermarket chains that come to mind, overlooking the commitment and value of independent grocery stores. Independent community grocers are organizations owned by their employees or families and differentiate themselves with a focus on the local community and providing community members with quality goods and services. Many of these stores rely on resources from external groups and supporters to help them operate and stay competitive with larger stores. Organizations like the National Grocers Association (NGA) offer independent grocers around the country the tools they need to continue to serve their customers.

NGA’s mission is to champion the independent grocery industry through advocacy, collaboration, education, services, and connections. NGA offers free solutions to address many of the challenges independent grocers may face. With multiple branches including the NGA Foundation that offers support for recruiting efforts, retention, and leadership development, and Women Grocers of America (WGA) that is dedicated to advancing women in the grocery industry, NGA continues to support and boost individuals and their stores in the grocery industry.

As part of their efforts, each year NGA hosts the NGA Show, an event that brings together retailers, the wholesalers who serve them, and Consumer-Packaged Goods (CPG) manufacturers to learn, engage, share, and network. This connected event offers the insights and innovations independent grocers need to enhance their business whether it is their first year of business or they are multi-generational owners. Edict Systems uses the NGA show to meet with wholesalers who provide goods and services to independent operators throughout the country. We enjoy meeting with grocers and discussing how implementing EDI and expanding their EDI capabilities can create tremendous cost saving opportunities to their organization.
